Kirk Franklin Apologizes for ‘Disrespectful’ Performances in Jamaica

Kirk Franklin wanted to get an apology off his chest months after two controversial performances.

In 2024, the gospel artist showed his biceps while wearing a tank top during a sweaty performance in Jamaica, which shocked some of his fans. At another concert, which was held on a date of Franklin's 'Reunion Tour,' the 20-time Grammy winner playfully twerked on Clark Sisters member Jacky Clark Chisholm.

To clear the air, in late December, Franklin gave a video apology to those who were offended by his performances.

"I am aware now that my choice of attire, which as a team we thought was going to be fine being outside in the weather, was going to be something that would not come across as disrespectful," Franklin said around the 6:30-minute mark of the video below, where he explained his outfit in Jamaica. "I’ve spent most of my career dancing and moving around and jumping on stage that I didn’t know that I would ever do anything that would ever offend anyone in any community, but it did. And because it did, I sincerely apologize."

He continued, "I sincerely apologize because I never want to get to a place that I can’t learn,” adding, “It doesn’t matter what my goal and intent is, if I’m louder than the message of Jesus, then I failed."

As for twerking on Clark Chisholm, Franklin called his gyrating "too much," although he's "friends" with those he's usually onstage with.

"I shouldn’t have been playing out there in front of y’all," he added. "I should have kept that to myself and had fun with them the way I do when we be acting a fool. But sometimes I get on my own nerves. And when I was doing it, it seemed fine. When I saw the clip, yeah, it’s too much."

Elsewhere in the recap video, Franklin detailed his 2024 BET Awards performance with Will Smith and the marriage of his son, Caziah.
