Holby City star Lisa Faulkner, 52, opened up about how she and John Torode, 59, keep their marriage healthy.
The actress married Masterchef judge John in 2019, and the couple went on to host their own show together, with Lisa having shown her skills on Celebrity Masterchef back in 2010. Despite working together on John and Lisa’s Weekend Kitchen, Lisa shared that not only spending time together when as a team at work was key to the success of their relationship.
“Different things work for different people, but I think the fact that we don’t work together all the time means that when we do, we have a nice time,” Lisa told Closer.
The EastEnders star added that they made time for romance and one-on-one time at home, too, and that their relationship was built on a solid foundation of sharing a lot in common.
“We look after each other, and we make sure we go on date nights or cook for each other. Both of us have always made the effort to listen, and we also like the same things, which helps,” she said.
Lisa also spoke about how she spends Christmas with John, revealing that her favourite Christmas present ever was an engagement ring, after John proposed to her on Christmas Day in 2018.
She added that she and John share cooking duties on the big day, but her major drawback of hosting was the cleaning up. Thankfully, she spilled that John was a “neat freak,” and took charge of cleaning duties for the festive feast.
While Lisa and John are now living it up in domestic bliss, she previously opened up about the early days of their relationship. Lisa was formerly married to actor Chris Coghill, while John was married to Jessica Thomas.
"He was a judge on a show I loved and I was petrified of him. He was brilliant and gave us all tips so you didn't want to let him down," Lisa previously said. "All I could think was, 'That sauce hasn't worked'. I didn't see anything but food for three months. After I won, we did The Good Food Show and stuff. John and I always got on, but I never thought about me and him,” Lisa said of John after they met on Celebrity MasterChef.
Soon however, both she and John were separated from their ex-spouses, and he made the first move. Unwilling to face rejection in-person, John risked writing a letter to ask her out for dinner.
"He asked me on a date. We went out for dinner. Then it was slightly different. I'm really, really happy. John and I are having such a nice time but we're taking things slowly. There are lots of other people to consider,” Lisa described before they tied the knot.
