The BBC is shaking up its presenter line-up once again as a much-loved host quits.
BBC Radio is having a major overhaul of its presenters in recent weeks, following the departure of Zoe Ball from BBC Radio 2 at the end of December. It came following her mysterious disappearance for weeks, adding her decision was to spend more time with her family.
Now, Lauren Laverne is set to walk away from her own radio show on BBC Radio 6. This comes after her cancer battle, being given the all-clear from the disease back in November.
Lauren is now set to leave her show to head for pastures new, as she made the announcement to her listeners live on air on Thursday (January 9). Instead of presenting in her regular slot on the schedule, Lauren revealed that she will now be taking on her new show in the late morning.
The One Show presenter's current show is currently being hosted by DJ Nick Grimshaw, who has been acting as a caretaker for Lauren's programme for the last couple of months. Lauren made a return to her show on Thursday, where she made the big announcement, but as a guest as Nick continued to hold down the fort.
"I am coming back to 6 Music, I'm delighted to say, but I'm not coming back to 6 Breakfast," Lauren revealed. Nick immediately chimed in: "It's been such an honour to look after your show Lauren, it really has."
Her replacement has already been released, as Nick will now fully take over from Lauren's current slot on BBC Radio 6 - marking the end of his three-year break from presenting, after leaving BBC Radio 1 back in 2022. Lauren broke the news shortly after: "I'm going to be on after you 10-1, which is really exciting - I'm really looking forward to it."
Lauren's move to the late morning shift comes after current host Mary Anne Hobbs announced she would be taking a step back from her show at the station. However, she revealed that she would be back in the late spring with a whole new show, though whether it will return to her usual slot is unknown.
In a fitting tribute, Lauren spoke fondly of Mary, describing her as "the most wonderful person", adding that Mary was the first person to congratulate Lauren on getting the green light from doctors on her cancer. Nick also only had lovely words to say of Mary, calling her "kind and nurturing".
On top of her regular BBC Radio job, she also will be continuing to present iconic radio show Desert Island Discs. Branding the move as her "dream job", she took over the role from Kirsty Young back in 2018 and has become a defining voice for the show since she took over.
It comes as Lauren continues to celebrate receiving the all-clear from cancer, telling fans that she was expecting to make a full recovery in time. She went on to thank the BBC for "their support and for giving me the time off that I need to get better".
