June “Mama June” Shannon looked back on daughter Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell’s death, telling fans that she cries often on the one-year anniversary of her passing.
“Here are some more photos of @annamarie35 please show her [account] some [love] today,” June, 45, captioned a video featuring photos and clips of Anna via Instagram on Monday, December 9.
After noting that June and her family “miss her everyday” and they “talk about her daily,” she added that “grief is crazy.”
“It comes out of nowhere. Sometimes I cry for no reason,” June continued about the grieving process. “I get mad cause she ain’t here to raise her kids and sometimes [it’s] mentally and emotionally draining. This year has been hell for all of us but she will never be forgotten [sic].”
Anna died on December 9, 2023, at the age of 29 following her battle with stage 4 cancer. “With the breaking heart, we are announcing that @annamarie35 is no longer with us,” June announced in a statement at the time. “She passed away in my home last night peacefully at 11:12 PM. She gave one hell of a fight for 10 months she passed away with her family around her like she won’t and we will [sic] be updating y’all with more information as we get it today.”
Just days before her death anniversary, June shared more insight into her grieving process in a Facebook post on December 3. “It will be a year on Monday and we miss the hell out of Anna Marie Cardwell and would give my last penny to just talk to her and [for] her [to] be here for her girls,” she wrote, referencing Anna’s kids Kaitlyn and Kylee. “Grief honestly [hurts] at random times.”
June added that she had “no control over crying,” “being mad” or acting like everything is OK when she felt like she was “dying inside.”
She said that Anna’s death was “so hard” on her and their entire family. “But we have [to] keep our promise [that] we take her [everywhere] with us like she wanted and I will continue to do so,” June continued.
Just six months after Anna died, June and daughters Lauryn “Pumpkin” Efird, Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Shannon and Jessica “Chubbs” Shannon reflected how they were honoring Anna during an exclusive interview with In Touch in June.
“I would say for me it’s a struggle. I do carry her. She’s actually with me today,” the matriarch said while showing off a tribute bracelet she got in honor of Anna. “We have jewelry and stuff that we carry. Like, she’s always with us. We talk about her all the time.”
Meanwhile, Lauryn, 24, explained that the family wanted to keep Anna’s memory alive for her daughters. June currently has custody of Kaitlyn, 12, and Kylee, 8, lives with her father, Michael Cardwell.
“We have Kaitlyn, too, so [that’s] definitely a consistent reminder in having Kaitlyn,” Lauryn told In Touch. “We wanna keep that alive, too. Cause that is her mama.”
