Mandy Moore has responded to people criticizing her decision to share a GoFundMe for her in-laws after they lost their home in the Eaton wildfire impacting Los Angeles.
In a post on Instagram shared on Thursday, Jan. 9, the 40-year-old singer-songwriter and actress revealed that her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Griff and Kit Goldsmith lost their house amid the wildfires across California. "With their first baby on the way in a matter of weeks, they need our support now more than ever," she wrote alongside a screenshot of the fundraising campaign. "Griff is a touring musician and also lost his entire arsenal of drums/percussion he uses to make a living. It’s all so much."
Moore, who has been sharing plenty of links to resources and relief campaigns on her Instagram Stories, faced backlash in the comments before she decided to restrict them. She later edited the post to address the negative comments from her followers.
"People questioning whether we're helping out our own family or attributing some arbitrary amount of money Google says someone has is NOT helpful or empathetic," she wrote. "Of course we are. Our buddy Matt started this GoFundMe and I'm sharing because people have asked how they can help them. We just lost most of our life in a fire too. Kindly F OFF. No one is forcing you to do anything."
As reported by PageSix, comments on her page called her out for asking for donations when she could use her own money.
"Not millionaires asking for donations for THEIR families," wrote one user. "You have boatloads of money. Wow. Did you help out anyone in Maui/NC/West Virginia," another asked. "You're a multi millionaire lmao figure it out."
The wildfires in Los Angeles have had a devastating impact on the region this week, forcing countless people to evacuate. Many have lost their homes in the fires, including Moore's This Is Us co-star Milo Ventimiglia, whose Malibu home burned down.
