Mary Cosby Breaks Down as Son Robert Jr. Reveals Drug Addiction and Suicidal Thoughts During RHOSLC Season 5

It’s a situation that no mother wants to deal with. After having her suspicions all season, Mary Cosby finally confronted her son about his drug addiction. The scene was heart-wrenching as the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City veteran came to know just how hard a time Robert Cosby Jr. was having.

To her credit, the mother-of-one listened without judgment and offered to get Robert the help he needed. Over the summer, Robert checked into a treatment facility in the neighboring state of California. In September, Mary updated fans on her son’s progress. Thankfully, he seems to be in a better place. But watching the footage from the November 27 episode was challenging.

Mary Cosby struggled to “reach” her “perfect child,” as son Robert Jr. revealed drug addiction

“Robert was like, the perfect child,” Mary said in a confessional interview. “He was very good in school. He got straight As all the way up until he graduated. When he set his mind to do something, he did it. He was like our prize, very smart, very advanced. That’s the Robert I know, and that’s the Robert I’m trying to reach.”

The Bravolebrity began the conversation by asking Robert Jr. for clarity. She pleaded, “You’ve gotta be real. You’ve gotta talk to me.”

Robert told his mother that he was awake all night, and decided to take a Xanax to get some relief.

“So were you just gonna sleep through the day? Just sleep your whole day away?” Mary asked.

“No, I just took half to just chill me out, and then I took an Adderall to balance out the Xanax,” he explained.

It was then that Mary became emotional. She questioned, “Are you unhappy?” and whether he felt this drug usage was concerning.

“Sometimes, I feel like, I don’t know, just life is like this chicken without seasoning,” Robert shared. “But when I get high, it’s like seasoning.”

Robert Jr. disclosed the extent of his drug use

Mary was then briefed on her son’s history with Xanax. Robert Jr. first took the prescription medication for anxiety at 16 at a party. He then progressed to the opioid painkiller Oxycontin.

“Then I was like, ‘I like this,’” he continued. “I started buying it. Then I started doing Xanax with acid, and then Molly with Xanax, because I really like Xanax, so I mixed it with everything, Xanax and cocaine.”

“You know, the regular 30-milligram Oxys?” Robert asked. “I noticed, like, this is a turning point for me. I was taking 10 at once, and I couldn’t even feel it and I couldn’t feel it at all.”

Mary got more emotional as the conversation progressed. However, she refused to “judge” her son.

“I can help you,” she told Robert. “I can try to help you, but you have to help yourself, because I’m not gonna support it. I’m not. You know I’m not. Do you accept it’s a problem, that you’re having a problem?”

It is said that half the battle is admitting that there is an issue. As it became clear that Robert did not have an answer, his mother began to cry more urgently.

Mary admitted that she “missed the mark”

“I just feel very disappointed with myself,” Mary said in a confessional interview. “I feel like I let him down somewhere. I’m very aware, and I do know that Robert did smoke weed. I do know he would eat edibles, but yet I just trusted him in my mind, thinking that’s where he would stop. And I was clearly wrong. I mean, clearly wrong. I missed the mark.”

“You’re blessed. You wake up every morning, every day is a new day, a blessed day to waste, to get high,” she told her son. “You will die.”

To Mary’ shock, Robert admitted to wanting “to die at the time.” She responded that that “would kill her.”

“I felt like a stain — I just felt like this world wasn’t for me,” he told her. “You’re the only reason I didn’t kill myself.”

“You have to know I love you more than anything,” Mary said. “More than anything in this world. I think I love you more than dad, like, don’t ever tell dad I said that, but you’re my friend, you’re my son, you’re my gift. God gave you to me. You’re the only thing that ever made me happy. Before I had you, I was never happy. You came and you were so real. It was everything I hoped for in a person.”

At this point, Robert Jr. also started to cry. He admitted, “I just barely started being happy again.”

The duo concluded the conversation with a hug. Mary advised her son to “recognize it, own it, and change” the situation.

“I love you,” he answered her.
