RHOSLC's Mary Cosby Discusses Her "Vulnerable" On-Screen Moment With Son Robert Jr., Why She Felt "Embarrassed," and How Husband Robert Sr. Has Handled Their Son's Pill Addiction

Mary Cosby looked back on the emotional scene she filmed with her son, Robert Cosby Jr., after last week’s episode of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City saw him confirming his addiction to pills.

Following the devastating and “vulnerable” moment between the mother and her 21-year-old son, Mary, 52, revealed she was shocked by Robert Jr.’s revelation as she discussed his “progress,” revealed why she felt “embarrassed” at that time, and explained Robert Cosby Sr.‘s handling of the upsetting news.

“That’s the whole thing of having children is, you wanna be able to protect them, and I just felt like I couldn’t, and I didn’t. I was just floored,” Mary admitted on the November 27 episode of the RHOSLC: After Show. “You want your kids to talk to you and be able to come to you and talk to you, and you also want to give them the tools to be able to say ‘no.'”

Although the scene was heartbreaking to watch, Mary felt that Robert Jr.’s ability to be honest with her about his struggles was a step in the right direction.

“I feel like he was vulnerable in that time, and the fact that we can get here and he can say, ‘You know what, Mom? This is how it started.’ … I thought it was progress. He said that he hit rock bottom and he’s ready to change, so I support him 100 percent,” she shared.

As for why she was embarrassed, Mary said she wished she’d learned of Robert Jr.’s hardships sooner.

“[It] is really hard because it’s almost embarrassing because at some point your child has to tell you, ‘Mom, I hit a vulnerable side, and I failed and I wasn’t able to bring myself back up, and now I get high. I do drugs,’” she explained.

Still, Mary stated that if Robert Jr., who has also faced legal issues in recent years, continues to “keep things real,” he will conquer his addiction.

Also on the RHOSLC: After Show, Mary revealed that because Robert Sr. went through similar things when he was younger, he was able to better understand the challenges Robert Jr. was facing.

“Before his mom made him go through the army, he enjoyed getting high, too. I never, I don’t have that to share with him. I can’t see through his eyes, those lenses, but I do understand him, and I don’t judge him,” she shared.

As for the future, Mary hopes what her family went through, and the discussions they were able to have, will be an example for others.

“I hope that it will help someone to bring their families together and just really understand that they won’t change unless their mind is made up, and if their mind isn’t made up, there’s nothing you can do. We still have [conversations] every day, and he does want to change, and that’s the only way it will work,” she added.
