Batman and Superman currently occupy two different cinematic universes, but that may be set to change.
The Batman director Matt Reeves commented on his plans for the character going forward, and how likely it is he'll meet Superman in the future.
"It really comes down to whether or not it makes sense," Reeves tells Happy Sad Confused on the red carpet at the Golden Globes. "What the future brings, I can't really tell you...we'll have to see where that goes."
Reeves didn't give a definitive answer, but he's clearly open to the idea of a reunion. The Batman released in 2022 and earned a reported worldwide gross of $772 million. Its sequel is now in development, with delays knocking back its planned release date to October 1, 2027.
Shooting has yet to begin, which leaves the door open for DC's new Superman to make an appearance. That actor is David Corenswet, who assumes the Man of Steel mantle for the first time in this summer's Superman movie. While his fantastical world of superheroes seems completely at odds with the more grounded setting of The Batman, Reeves isn't ruling out the two crossing paths.
The last time they did is in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which sees Ben Affleck's Dark Knight square off against Henry Cavill's Superman. Despite grossing $873 million worldwide and earning the rank of the seventh-highest-grossing film of the year, it was largely knocked by critics.
That's why both Reeves and Superman director/DC co-CEO James Gunn will be keen to do the two iconic characters justice. The debut trailer for Superman is one of the most-watched in DC's history, with 51m views since its release two weeks ago.
