The New York Mets have put together one of the best offseasons in the league this winter. This is largely because of the monumental signing of superstar Juan Soto, but New York has added a few other solid free agents as well.
At this point, the Mets need one hitter to complete their lineup. New York could add either corner infield position because Mark Vientos can play either first base or third base.
The obvious answer is re-signing first baseman Pete Alonso and running it back in 2025 with a very similar roster to 2024, only with the addition of Soto.
But the Mets could be looking to add a third baseman rather than re-signing Alonso.
The New York Post's Jon Heyman recently reported the Mets may still be interested in a free-agent third baseman.
"I'm not going to rule out (Alex) Bregman to the Mets at this point," Heyman said.
Bregman's market is quite a bit hotter than Alonso's with the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, and New York Yankees all reportedly still interested in the third baseman's services.
As a result, Bregman is often projected to land a deal close to $200 million while Alonso's deal will likely land in the $150 million range. Mets owner Steve Cohen certainly has the money to add either Bregman or Alonso.
It makes sense why the Mets haven't re-signed Alonso at this point, considering they're still in the race for Bregman. It seems as though the third baseman is their top priority while Alonso is just the backup option if Bregman heads elsewhere.
