Mice and rats are more likely to sneak into homes in winter to find warm shelter, which can be a major concern as they can squeeze into a crack as small as a pencil.

Rodents are clever and can enter homes through unsealed gaps in windows or cracks in the wall, but they can even get through the gutters on rooftops.

However, there is no need to despair or put down rat poison. The pest control experts at Elite Extermination have shared that one item in your kitchen can stop mice from entering your home.

They said: “It may seem like a folk remedy, but aluminium foil is actually an effective natural mouse repellent.

“Mice dislike the sound and smell of aluminium foil. And even though they are good climbers, they just can’t cling to it.

It may seem bizarre, but aluminium foil is too slippery for mice to climb onto and is tough, so it can hurt them if they try to chew through it.

Mice also have highly sensitive ears, and the crinkling noise from the foil can scare them or make them uncomfortable, which means they will likely give up and try to find shelter somewhere else.

The expert added: “To use aluminium foil to repel mice, wrap it around the objects you want to protect. You can also place balls of foil in strategic areas within your home.”

However, if you want a more fatal method, then you can also keep mice away using baking soda, as it is toxic to mice.

Due to their digestive system, mice cannot burp or pass gas, and baking soda reacts with stomach acids to create carbon dioxide gas, which eventually kills them.

The expert said: “Baking soda is a common household product that is poisonous to mice. Simply sprinkle the product in areas where the intruder likes to go. You could mix the baking soda in with mouse bait: cereal, dried fruit, peanut butter, etc.

“However, you should avoid using this method if you have children or pets, as they may be tempted to eat the bait.”

If an animal or child ingests a large amount of baking soda, it will cause gas build-up, which can cause stomach ache and, in severe cases, a serious health complication. Therefore, it is much better to be cautious.

However, if you are still looking for simple remedies that do not involve putting down rat poison, consider spraying certain strong scents around your home.

Mice have very sensitive noses and can also be deterred with peppermint oil, lavender and other natural solutions.
