Lake Rucker didn’t quite get the birthday she had hoped for. Despite inviting the Southern Hospitality cast to her mother’s gorgeous lake house, it wasn’t all good vibes for the newbie’s birthday. Michols Peña changed the outcome after speaking to Emmy Sharrett about Will Kulp’s trash-talking her during a night out.
Emmy became defensive and resented the public nature of the conversation. She preferred to speak one-on-one rather than in a group setting. She called Will in hysterics, and he enlisted his brother to bring Emmy home.
Lake Rucker was “frustrated” by Emmy leaving early
As new cast members, Michols and Lake witnessed the group drama for the first time. And they both shared their reaction to the latest Southern Hospitality episode during which Emmy left Lake’s birthday celebrations.
The duo spoke to TV-Insider about the drama, which culminated at the dinner table. The interviewer asked Lake if she was “a little frustrated” with all the conflict “happening at your birthday dinner.”
“Well, yes, I was kind of frustrated. I think we were just all drinking — well, I was drinking all day. It was a lot going on at once, and it was my birthday. And so I was hoping that it would be about me and not about a crash out. But things happen and I deal with it,” Lake answered.
“Honestly, I wasn’t mad,” she continued, speaking about Emmy’s early exit. “That’s disrespectful. I invite you to my home, and you would expect some hospitality coming from people that have a show named Hospitality after them… but there was no hospitality to be shown at my house. I was annoyed. I’m not even gonna lie, I was annoyed because it was just disrespectful, but that’s just me.”
Michols Peña wanted Emmy to know what was being said behind her back
Michols is “the one [Emmy] trusted most from the group.” And he was asked if he regretted the timing of the discussion with Emmy. The interviewer asked him “Why did you think you wanted to do it then?”
“So for me, as you can see, Emmy and I are best friends as the summer goes on, and it’s already hard enough to manage somebody that you’re best friends with and also be their best friend at work outside of work,” Michols replied. “It kind of puts you in a tricky situation. So I knew this conversation was never going to be anything easy, but I never thought the day would come where I would have to have it. Just because it did happen when cameras weren’t around.”
He continued, “Everybody in the group was starting to learn about the conversation that was had and the things that were said, and I’m the kind of person that’s just like, ‘You know what? If it was happening to me, I would want somebody to come and tell me.’ I don’t know, yeah, that’s the kind of person I am. If my partner’s going behind my back and talking poorly about me, I would want to know”
“And also Emmy being my best friend, it was a secret that I held on to for so long because I never like to put myself in other people’s business or their relationships, especially just because this group is notorious for getting in other people’s relationships,” Michols said. “And so it just kind of put me in a sticky situation, and it was almost kind of… throughout the time, it was a little unbearable to be around her for me because I felt so uncomfortable.”
Michols didn’t want Emmy to be “blind-sided” by what was being said
The Southern Hospitality assistant general manager thought the laid-back setting would make the conversation easier.
He explained, “And then finally getting to the lake when I knew, okay, we’re not in Charleston, we’re also not at work. I can sit down with her and have this conversation because if I don’t do it now, it’s gonna blow up in her face and she’s gonna be blindsided. And I know that if it were happening to me, the last thing I would want is that, and the only thing I would have wanted is for my friends to sit me down and have a one-on-one conversation.”
Michols wanted to be “transparent” with Emmy
The side discussions within the group forced the new reality TV star to speak to his friend. And he felt obligated at that point.
“One thousand percent. Yeah, everybody already knew,” Michols agreed.
He added, “It kind of sucks because of the way that it played out, but I feel better now that the conversation was had. I think that I would have felt worse if everybody would have just ambushed her or attacked her at dinner. And then you are as transparent as you could be in a situation like that. You’re handed this information about one of your closest friends. What else can you do?”
The fact that the new Bravolebrity was not friends with Will also made the conversation with Emmy awkward.
“I think it was just a little worse for me, too, just because I don’t have that close of a relationship with Will, and this is somebody that I’m best friends with. So it’s just like already very tricky and it’s like one of those, ‘I’m not trying to put you in a weird position where you have to choose your boyfriend over your friend. I’m telling you this because I would want to know if it were me, but also because I respect you enough to tell you,'” he stated.
Southern Hospitality viewers will have to wait and see what the fallout is on the next episode.
