If you've been desperately scouring local pharmacies and Boots stores for a tube of Metanium's yellow Nappy Rash Ointment, you'll have almost certainly been left disappointed when you didn't spot it in its usual position on shelves. The reason for this is the product has been discontinued– much to the devastation of parents.
This is supposedly because the brand can't source enough of the key ingredient used in the ointment, and as such, stock has dwindled to almost none. The official word from the pharmaceutical company is: "Thornton & Ross has taken the decision to discontinue Metanium Nappy Rash Ointment. This is due to constraints that have impacted our ability to guarantee consistent supply and maintain the high standards of excellence we strive for in all our products."
If you aren't a parent or a baby caretaker, you might just say, 'Well, surely there are other brands out there', but Metanium yellow users will know there isn't really anything else that works miracles on nappy rashes – hence why tubes of the ointment are being sold on eBay in bundles for upwards of £100.
The key ingredient in the much-loved yellow ointment is 20% titanium dioxide, which is not found in other readily available nappy creams. So what are desperate parents to do? A new forum on Mumsnet is bursting with alternative solutions to try, with three affordable and in-stock options being backed by former Metanium buyers.

One user suggested: "Absolute best nappy rash cream (believe me ours has rashes so bad they bled due to allergies) is the Weleda Calendula cream. And it’s very natural. Goes on thick, doesn’t stain, lasts hours."
"Also gutted over here! We found that Sudosalve also worked wonders for us," said another, while a third offered up their solution: "Oh Metanium was rubbish compared to the miracle of Bepanthen. I still use it for all sore, dried skin or chafing."

If you're wondering whether Metanium's other offering, the Everyday Barrier Ointment, will do the trick, the answer is probably no. The brand explains: "Though not a treatment for nappy rash, it's designed to provide effective protection against the irritants that can cause nappy rash whilst maintaining the skin's natural barrier."
