The NBA trade deadline has come and gone, with it being one of the more wild ones in recent memory. We saw multiple star players get moved and as always, there were some shocking trades going down.
But which teams come away as the biggest winners and the biggest losers? Here at Newsweek Sports, we have you covered with the three biggest winners and losers from this trade deadline.
Winners
Los Angeles Lakers
When you land star Luka Doncic, you win the trade deadline. Simply put, the Lakers front office reset the entire decade for themselves while also putting a more win-now product on the floor.
But Los Angeles didn't stop with Doncic and they went out to land star center Mark Williams. The Lakers needed a center and Williams can fill the role very nicely.
Let's also not forget that the Lakers traded for wing Dorian Finney-Smith weeks ago as well. This team looks very different from even a few days ago but they are now set up extremely well for the present and in the future.
Charlotte Hornets
With the Hornets going nowhere, the front office decided to take advantage of the situation. While they likely didn't want to trade Williams, the team did receive a nice haul from the Lakers.
Dalton Knecht will give this Hornets team another offensive weapon and his upside is extremely high. Charlotte also landed multiple second-round picks from the Phoenix Suns for Nick Richards. Additionally, Charlotte landed an extra first-round pick from the Suns for Cody Martin.
It has been a good few weeks for this Hornets team, even with them trading away some pieces. Charlotte is building toward the future and the front office has put them into a nice position down the line.
San Antonio Spurs
Lost in much of the trade noise was the Spurs landing star guard De'Aaron Fox. Fox now pairs alongside second-year sensation Victor Wembanyama to give San Antonio a legitimate star duo.
San Antonio didn't have to give up too much and they now have another cornerstone piece. The Spurs want to get back into playoff contention and adding Fox will surely do that.
The fun is just getting started for the Spurs with this deal.
Losers
Dallas Mavericks
It's not often that a team lands a 10-time All-Star still in his prime and they end up on the loser board. But trading away Doncic will do just that.
While Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison believes that the Doncic for Davis swap will benefit the team, he has now angered the majority of the fanbase. Doncic was the Mavericks franchise player and in the full prime of his career.
Dallas risked a lot by trading Doncic and for that, they are seen as the losers of the trade.
Golden State Warriors
Throughout the entire trade deadline, there were reports about how hungry the Warriors were to add another star player. Golden State did trade for star Jimmy Butler but it seemed to be out of desperation rather than an ideal fit.
The Warriors wanted Kevin Durant but the former Golden State champion didn't reciprocate the feelings. While the team did land Butler, they now will deal with the headache that he has become.
His time in Miami showed the damage he could cause and on top of that, Golden State gave him a massive extension. The Warriors need to win a title, otherwise, this trade will go down as a very poor one.
Phoenix Suns
After all the talk about how the Suns were going to improve their roster, they hardly did anything. Most of this is due to guard Bradley Beal declining to waive his no-trade clause but Phoenix knew he had this when they traded for him.
While they did trade center Jusuf Nurkic, they had to include a first-round pick in the deal. Martin is a solid addition but this was a bad deadline for the Suns.
The Suns have been having a tough year in the Western Conference this season and should have done more to improve the roster. Even with the limited assets that they had, Phoenix missed an opportunity to even get off some salary.
If Phoenix isn't careful, they could find themselves having another lost season even with the services of its three-star players.
