Cinema buffs have been mercilessly poking fun at the new Netflix film starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt.
The Electric State will be directed by The Russo Brothers of Avengers: Endgame fame. Despite the star-studded lineup and the directors' blockbuster experience, the movie, set to premiere on March 14, has already drawn yawns from the audience.
A social media post announcing the release date of The Electric State was met with ridicule as people joked it could be the "first film in history people forget while watching."
This brutal jab has since gone viral on X, with one commenter writing: "This might be the first movie that people forget about while they're still watching it."
Others were shocked to learn The Russo Brothers are slated to helm the next Avengers feature, Secret Wars, due out in 2027.
Doubts were cast by a user who wrote: "When this becomes their third bomb in a row are Marvel really going to trust them for the next two Avengers movies?" Another joked: "And this is made by the same guys who are directing the next two Avengers films. lol."
The Electric State, Simon Stålenhag's 2018 illustrated novel, has a loyal fanbase that's been left bitterly disappointed by its recent adaptation. One disgruntled fan wrote: "And it sucks, because it's based on a book that's way better than the plot shown here by a long mile."
Another added: "But the book is so good. (It's nothing like the book literally at all)." A third wrote: "Disappointing because the book that this is based on is so beautiful and well crafted."
The frustration was palpable across social media, with one user posting a GIF of Patrick Star from SpongeBob SquarePants dozing off, captioning it: "Nine seconds into the trailer."
Despite the harsh criticism, some fans are keeping an open mind, with one optimist writing: "I'm willing to give it a chance, it's got an interesting aesthetic. Though I thought the same about the Mortal Engines trailer... and then I never got around to watching it."
Meanwhile, another Stålenhag enthusiast pointed out the missed opportunity: "This movie had so much potential. Simon Stålenhag's art and stories are so great The Electric State in specific is such a egregious choice this type of story, if they wanted so bad a family oriented action movie why with Millie Bobby Brown Tales from the Loop is right there."
Some are bracing for a disaster, with one critic labelling The Electric State's trailer as a "dumpster fire". They penned: "This looks like absolute dogs**t. And I'm not one to judge after one clip. And I have nothing against Millie or Pratt. But dang. Every other scene better be gold. Or this is gonna be a dumpster fire."
