Philomena Cunk asking the big questions; the return of one of film history’s greatest villains; the start of a groundbreaking rights deal for live wrestling; an epic Western drama that captures the brutality of the American frontier; Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz headlining a spy caper; and Gabriel Basso returning to his breakout role are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in January.
On Jan. 2, we will see the welcome return of Philomena Cunk on Netflix, perhaps the world’s greatest investigative reporter who is simultaneously the worst informed person on TV. Born from the mind of Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker, deadpan queen Diane Morgan stars once more as Cunk in Cunk on Life, a followup mockumentary series to Cunk on Earth and Cunk on Britain. In Cunk on Life, once again Cunk asks absurdist, baffling and genuinely hilarious questions about the ‘big issues’ — this time it’s about the meaning of life — to real-life experts who may or may not be in on the joke. A must-watch.
Launching globally on Netflix on Jan. 3 is the hotly anticipated Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl. The sixth entry in the beloved stop-motion animation Wallace & Gromit franchise, the Vengeance Most Fowl sees the lads having to take on the dreaded Feathers McGraw, the dastardly villain from The Wrong Trousers, who is out for, well, revenge. Directed by franchise creator Nick Park as well as Merlin Crossingham, the film boasts a perfect 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes (from 79 reviews) and features the usual breathtaking animation, gags aplenty and Gromit proving once more that he’s among the great screen heroes.
The WWE debuts on Netflix on Jan. 6, the start of a groundbreaking 10-year $5 billion rights deal between the two companies. WWE’s flagship program Monday Night Raw, which previously aired on the USA Network, will now call Netflix home, with Raw streaming live every Monday night in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Latin America, 52 weeks per year, with other territories to be added over time.
On Jan. 9, Western television series American Primeval debuts on Netflix. Directed by Friday Night Lights creator Peter Berg and written by The Revenant scribe Mark L. Smith, American Primeval is set in the brutal American frontier of 1857 where only one goal matters: survival. The series is described as a fictionalized dramatization and examination of the violent collision of culture, religion and community as men and women fight and die to either keep or claim the lands that make up the brutal frontier lands. Among those men and women are multiple Native Tribes who have long occupied the lands: the Shoshone, Paiute and Ute. Taylor Kitsch and Betty Gilpin lead an ensemble cast of this limited series.
Netflix’s most high profile film release this month drops on Jan. 17, with Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz headlining the spy comedy caper Back In Action. Seth Gordon‘s movie centers on Matt (Foxx) and Emily (Diaz), who gave up their lives as CIA spies in order to start a family but find themselves forced back into their previous roles when their cover is suddenly blown. Kyle Chandler, Andrew Scott, Jamie Demetriou, McKenna Roberts, Rylan Jackson and Glenn Close round out the cast.
Barrelling it’s way on to Netflix on Jan. 23 is season two of breakout hit The Night Agent. Based on the novel by Matthew Quirk, season one of the spy drama centered on then low-level FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), whose efforts to save the president now earn him an opportunity to become a Night Agent in season two. But working in the secretive organization of Night Action will propel Peter into a world where danger is everywhere and trust is in short supply. The first season of Night Agent currently ranks seventh all time among English-language series in Netflix’s internal rankings. The show has already been renewed for season three.
