Nick 'Grimmy' Grimshaw is back on breakfast radio permanently - after he announced he is taking over from Lauren Laverne on BBC 6Music who is moving to a new show.

The pair announced the news in the studio this morning, with Lauren returning to the airwaves next month with in a 10am till 1pm slot and Grimmy the new permanent breakfast host. Nick welcomed Lauren back onto her show and said it was "wonderful" to be on amid her "difficult" time.

They made the announcement together as Lauren thanked Nick for stepping in for her. Lauren revealed: "I am coming back to 6Music, I am delighted to say. But not to breakfast. I am making a change, it is the right time and the 6Music breakfast show has a new host." Nick added: "It does and it's going to be me, as it has been for the past couple of months.

"It has been such an honour to look after your show Lauren, it really has. I am just so excited to be doing it and that we are going to hear you everyday on the radio." Grimmy has been covering for Lauren in the mornings in recent months. She announced she was undergoing cancer treatment back in August after a screening test caught the disease "early and unexpectedly". She then was given the all clear in November. Grimmy is no stranger to breakfast radio, having fronted the Radio 1 breakfast show for six years from 2012 to 2018.

Lauren had previously said she was set to return to 6 Music in the new year, and she will now return with a new show. Thanking medical staff, friends and all those who sent her get well wishes, Laverne said in November she would most like to thank her husband Graeme and her two children, who she said have been "absolutely extraordinary throughout".

"It's been a difficult time but one that has taught me so much about what really matters," she wrote. "I can't say I suddenly regretted never having hiked the Inca Trail, more that I now see more beauty in ordinary things than I could have imagined, and feel more than ever that the small things in life - the connections we make and care we take with each other - are the big things really."

In November Grimmy had told the Mirror how he would like a permanent return to the airwaves having filled in for DJs at both Radio 2 and 6 Music. He said: "I love doing it. I love the routine of it. I love hearing from people. That's the only thing that you miss on podcasts, is the sort of constant chat, basically, from listeners. You get emails and voice notes in [on podcasts] but I like that radio can go any way.

"We're doing Radio 6 and Radio 2 on Saturdays at the moment as well and I guess the live element of it is a lot more fun. It's slightly more terrifying in that it's live, but it feels more connected, I guess, to people that are listening, because they're able to interact immediately. So I did miss that. And I missed that the daily task of trying to find the thing that everyone's talking about that day. I love that, like the sort of, you know, the general conversation of the country. The texts are always so funny and interesting."
