North Korea Tests Exploding Kamikaze Attack Drones

1 month ago 4

North Korea has tested self-exploding kamikaze attack drones designed to crash into targets, with leader Kim Jong Un now calling for the mass production of the weapons.

The nation's recent testing of explosive drones coincides with joint military exercises conducted by the United States, South Korea, and Japan. These drills, featuring advanced fighter jets and a U.S. aircraft carrier, are taking place in international waters near the Korean Peninsula, underscoring the allies' defensive stance in response to North Korean activities.

North Korea's state Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) released images of Kim discussing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with officials. The photos showcased at least two types of drones, including models with X-shaped tails and wings, resembling those unveiled in August during a demonstration of impact-exploding drones. This suggests a continued focus on advancing drone technology within the country's military programs.

How Effective Are Kamikaze Attack Drones?

According to KCNA, the drones reportedly flew along various routes and struck targets with precision. Images from the report showed what appeared to be a BMW sedan being destroyed and older tank models blown up, highlighting the drones' capabilities.

Kim expressed satisfaction with the weapons' development process and stressed the need to "build a serial production system as early as possible and go into full-scale mass production," noting how drones are becoming crucial in modern warfare.

According to KCNA, Kim highlighted that drones are inexpensive and straightforward to produce, making them suitable for various military applications. The report did not specify whether Kim directly mentioned South Korea.

Why Is Tension So High Between North and South Korea?

In October 2024, North Korea accused South Korea of deploying drones to disperse anti-North Korean propaganda leaflets over Pyongyang, warning of potential forceful retaliation if such actions were repeated. South Korea's military neither confirmed nor denied these allegations.

Tensions in the region have escalated while Kim showcases advancements in North Korea's nuclear and missile programs. These developments include nuclear-capable weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles with the potential to reach the U.S. mainland.

Is North Korea Helping Russia Against Ukraine?

North Korea has reportedly been supplying military equipment and deploying an estimated 12,000 troops to Russia in support of President Vladimir Putin's actions in Ukraine. This collaboration has raised concerns in Seoul about the potential transfer of Russian technology to North Korea, which could further enhance Kim's arsenal.

In addition to escalating nuclear threats, Kim has intensified psychological and electronic warfare tactics against South Korea. These actions include launching thousands of balloons carrying trash into South Korean territory and disrupting GPS signals near major airports, aiming to destabilize and provoke the South.

South Korean officials have indicated that North Korea will be a central focus during a trilateral summit involving South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, U.S. President Joe Biden, and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. The meeting is set to take place during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Peru, with discussions likely to center on addressing the increasing threats posed by North Korea's nuclear and missile programs and enhancing regional security.
