In his informative video on YouTube, Jerry James Stone revealed the best food storage hack to make onions last for up to "six months".

The versatile vegetable, which is the base for many recipes, should not be stored in the refrigerator, as it "will get mushy and rot really quickly."

Mr Stone added that onions shouldn't be stored in the pantry, either, unless there is "good ventilation." He explained that "onions prefer dry, cool [storage spaces] that have good ventilation."

This is why onions will not stay fresh in closed drawers or a pantry with little air circulation.

Plus, onions must not be stored next to potatoes because their close proximity will cause spuds to sprout.

Instead, onions re best stored "next to garlic", Mr Stone affirmed. This is because garlic and onions stay fresh in the same environment - cool, dry and well ventilated.

If you store onions in this way, next to garlic, Mr Stone promised the onions "can last up to six months".

In the comments section, people thanked Mr Stone for sharing his top food storage hack.

One commentator said: "Wow, I always always stored them next to potatoes and they always sprouted. I thought I just didn't eat them soon enough. Thanks for this."

Another, in the same vein, shared: "I always had stored my potatoes and onions together and wondered why they always sprouted so fast. Thank you so much for this new knowledge! I will pass it down to my children and their children."

One fan queried: "So, even if the onion has been cut and only partially used, you keep it out? And don't cover it?"

Mr Stone quickly clarified: "Oh, no. Once cut, definitely put it in the refrigerator."

For those tempted to store their onions in a brown paper bag, Mr Stone added: "Leave the bag open; they need air flow."
