Outlander star Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser in the historical fantasy series, has teased a “multiple endings” for season 8 of the Starz show.
The second part of season 7 has finally made its debut and, according to Heughan, the final season could have several different conclusions.
The actor, who has starred in Outlander for the last decade, spoke about what the show has in store in an interview with TV Insider.
He said: “There’s just so many ways that we could finish the story. We want to make it right. We’ve had a lot of discussions. We’ve put in our two cents.
“Everyone’s got their own version of how they want it to end, from the fans to the producers to the writer.
“And I actually think there might be multiple endings from what I hear,” he added mysteriously.
Meanwhile, his co-star Caitriona Balfe, who plays Claire Fraser in the historical fantasy show, said: “[Season 8] is probably the season I’ve known the least about going into it.
“I have no idea how the season ends. We only got the scripts for Episodes 1 and 2 about two months before we started. We would usually have more [time].
“I don’t think [the producers] trust any of us, to be honest,” she added with a laugh.
“I think they’re trying to keep things very, very close to their chest. We are as excited and nervous and curious to see what’s going to happen as everybody else.”
In a previous interview with The Herald about season 8, Heughan confessed that he has lobbied for a finale that would resonate with the fans who have followed the show over the years.
He admitted that the series was "supposed to finish this season", but he "didn't want to finish without finishing the story", leading to the Outlander cast "going back to do one more [season]”.
"I want to finish the story, not only for myself but for the fans. It wouldn't feel satisfactory to just end it, left in the air," the actor explained.
It appears Heughan is keen to influence the way fans bid farewell to their favourite Outlander characters, with the actor adding: "Diana is still writing the 10th book and there is plenty more that we haven't been able to cover.
"We will have to end it some way. Perhaps not a way that the books end it. I am pushing for a different ending.
"I don't think I am going to get what I want," he added, before reasoning that - while the finale "is never going to be satisfactory for everyone" - hopefully fans will get given "some sort of finality".
