The San Diego Padres are reportedly open to trading a lot of their expiring contracts this season. San Diego has a lot of money wrapped up in a few of their top stars.
Because of this, almost nobody on the Padres roster is safe.
Zachary Rymer of Bleacher Report recently predicted the Padres would trade Luis Arráez this season. Rymer listed the Cincinnati Reds, Detroit Tigers, San Francisco Giants, and Seattle Mariners as possible suitors.
"Arraez has won three straight batting titles and his career average (.323) is equivalent to that of the second-leading hitter from last season," Rymer wrote. "He has swung and missed 405 times since 2019, a number surpassed by eight hitters in 2024 alone. There are caveats, of course. Arraez only hits singles and rarely walks. He's also deficient defensively at second base and first base. All the same, this is a good guy to have at the top of a lineup and his market is likely to reflect that if he becomes available."
The Reds wouldn't make much sense here unless they suffer quite a few injuries. Matt McLain and Gavin Lux look to handle second base. Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Jeimer Candelario, and Spencer Steer are all solid options.
The Mariners could look to add any offense at all, so they would make quite a bit of sense. Both the Tigers and Giants could add a first baseman this season. Both of those offenses could use a high-average guy like Arráez at the top of the lineup.
