The 2024 Fashion Awards red carpet has seen PETA take over with placards calling out animal abuse.

Two supporters of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals organisation held up signs reading “Feathers Are Worn by Beautiful Birds And Ugly People”. They have said it was done to call attention to the way birds are raised and killed for their feathers to be used in the fashion industry.

The awards ceremony is being held at London's Albert Hall and has seen a range of star-studded guests in attendance. Rihanna and ASAP Rocky were fashionably late as they arrived on the red carpet behind major stars including pop star Rita Ora and actor Glen Powell.

PETA Senior Campaigns Manager Kate Werner said: “Every feathered frock and down-filled jacket spells misery for sensitive birds, who are tormented, plucked, and violently slaughtered for their plumage. PETA is calling on designers and compassionate consumers everywhere to leave birds in peace and embrace innovative vegan materials that no one had to suffer and die for.”

Fashion designer Stella McCartney recently launched a Feather-Free Pledge in collaboration with PETA. The group is also calling on Moncler Group to ditch feathers in their garements.

At the event, ASAP wore a bold, blue oversized suit and Rihanna stood out in a furry blue outfit. Hiding beneath a huge oversized hat, the chart-topping star wrapped herself in a fluffy baby blue jacket and wore a black outfit underneath, and paired the ensemble with sheer tights, satin heels, and black leather opera gloves.

ASAP was set to pick up the cultural innovator award, which celebrates a leader who has created “viral fashion moments which have had a profound impact on the fashion industry and wider culture” over the last year. The couple almost have a trademark for arriving late to red carpet events - including in 2021 when they arrived at the Met Gala after Vogue’s livestream of the carpet had finished.

Musician Ellie Goulding was also on the red carpet sporting white in a Moncler puffer coat couture gown, while actress Simone Ashley was a cream strapless Prada look with a dramatic train. Her fellow Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan channelled Regency glamour in a strapless Gaurav Gupta ballgown. Love Island presenter Maya Jama was dressed in a floral green Conner Ives embroidered gown.

Rita Ora turned heads by wearing jewellery from her Primark collection and sporting a blonde mullet and dyed eyebrows. Tennis superstar Venus Williams posed in a sleek Thom Browne black blazer and cut-off trousers, while fellow former tennis star Maria Sharapova opted for an all-white look.

Earlier this year, Victoria Beckham's show at Paris Fashion Week was disrupted by activists from PETA. The campaigners got up during the show and walked the runway alongside the models while holding up signs saying "viva vegan leather". Their T-shirts read: "Animals aren't fabric. Turn your back on animals skins." People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) said while Beckham's brand has banned the use of fur and exotic skins, "it still uses a large quantity of cruelly obtained leather, particularly calfskin".

The non-profit organisation said it had also stormed the catwalks of Coach in New York, Burberry in London, and Fendi in Milan this season. The non-profit organisation's president for Europe, Mimi Bekhechi, said: "No garment or accessory is worth violently slaughtering and skinning a sensitive and intelligent animal."
