Former Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan has hit out at the audience members at Saturday Night Live after they cheered and clapped for Luigi Mangione.

Over the weekend, comedians Colin Jost and Michael Che updated fans on the latest happenings in the world with their hilarious segment, Weekend Update. At one point, he discussed Mangione, who is accused of murdering United Healthcare CEO, Brian Thompson.

Thompson was shot dead outside of a Hilton Hotel in New York City earlier this month. Last week, Mangione arrived back in New York to be put on trial for the murder of Brian Thompson, having initially fled to Pennsylvania. Pictures of his extradition quickly went viral on social media platforms.

As Jost brought up the computer science graduate, the SNL audience members immediately clapped and cheered for the 26-year-old. Jost, who seemed shocked but amused by the response, replied to the audience: "Yeah... definitely ‘woo’. You’re wooing for justice, right?"

Continuing with his joke, Jost added: “Luigi Mangione dropped his extradition fight and was flown from Pennsylvania to New York to face multiple charges. In related news, Bumble exploded," as he referred to the dating application. After watching the clip, Piers Morgan took to his Twitter page to share the video.

He added: "So disgusting… and Colin Jost just smirks away as if it’s all one big giggle. Shameful moment for SNL.” Republicans, including Donald Trump's homeland security advisor, Stephen Miller, also took issue with the moment and wrote on X: "Revolting. Sickening. Vile."

Currently, the charges Mangione face include one punishable by death. These include first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism and federal charges including crimes of murder, stalking and weapons violations. During his 15-minute hearing last week, Mangione didn't request bail and will stay detained, according to the Associated Press. However he can request bail at a later date if he so wishes.

Magione was arrested in Pennsylvania five days after the shooting after he was spotted at a McDonald's restaurant. The 26-year-old Ivy League graduate from a major Maryland real estate family was apprehended on December 9. He is understood to have left a trail of evidence including a Starbucks water bottle as well as an energy bar wrapper. A backpack like that worn during the shooting was also located in Central Park.
