Is Nolan Arenado a fallback plan for the Boston Red Sox? That's what team broadcaster apparently believes after learning about the latest trade rumors involving the star third baseman.
On Monday, MLB Network's Jon Morosi reported the Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals recently renewed talks about an Arenado trade. He also noted how a potential Arenado trade could impact free agent Alex Bregman, whom Boston has shown interest in throughout the offseason.
"The Red Sox and Cardinals have had recent communication about Nolan Arenado, source says," Morosi wrote on the X platform. "If the trade talks move forward, they could have implications for Alex Bregman's market. Of note, Cardinals exec Chaim Bloom has close knowledge of Boston's prospects."
Merloni offered a take after learning about Morosi's report.
"With the report of the Sox checking in with Arenado, kind of has a feel that he's there if they want him but wanted to see if they could get Bregman on a good contract first," Merloni wrote on X. "If not, pivot to Arenado. Or they get neither which I'm sure will fill my timeline."
The Red Sox have been open about their desire to add a right-handed bat this offseason. Last weekend, franchise CEO Sam Kennedy indicated Boston still could make a significant addition before the start of the 2025 season.
Could months' worth of rumors give way to an actual Red Sox-Arenado trade? We'll just have to wait and see.
