Red Sox Reportedly Eyeing New Contracts For Trio Of Top MLB Prospects

Last year, the Red Sox signed unproven youngsters Ceddanne Rafaela and Brayan Bello to long-term contract extensions. Could similar deals be in the works for Boston's trio of star prospects?

Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer all are on the verge of big-league promotions. Anthony and Campbell, two of the consensus top 10 prospects baseball, could land on the Opening Day roster, whereas Mayer, a top 25 prospect on most national lists, might not be far behind.

On Sunday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reported the Red Sox soon could work on contract extensions for Anthony, Campbell and Mayer.

"The team, according to multiple sources, is interested in exploring the possibility of long-term deals with players in that group, and for good reason," Speier wrote.

Speier added that the Red Sox hadn't begun contract talks with the three prospects. However, he noted that Anthony is "willing" to listen to extension proposals, and shared a quote from Campbell, who last year said he was open to a long-term extension.

"One-hundred percent," Campbell said last season when asked whether he was interested in an extension. "This is definitely an organization I would love to be with for a long period of time. It's a conversation definitely to have, and I would definitely be open to that."

While speaking with NESN's Tom Caron last weekend, Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy shared his thoughts on extending prospects.

"We're set now with that group for the foreseeable future," Kennedy said at Boston's Fenway Fest. "That was the goal: To get us into this position, where we've got a sustainable group that can be competitive year-in, year-out as we go forward. There's a plan for a lot of our guys internally to try and extend. That's something that's really important for great organizations.

"In our 24 years, there's been really important internal extensions that have led to World Series championships. That is a goal and a priority with respect to [Garrett Crochet] but also to other guys in our organization."

Anthony, Campbell and Mayer are ranked first, second and third, respectively, by SoxProspects.com. Anthony finished the 2024 season atop Baseball America's prospect rankings.
