Red Sox Reportedly Would Have Acquired Budding Ace In Blockbuster Trade

The Boston Red Sox have been active this winter, specifically in pursuit of starting pitching. They've already added Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler, but there are rumors indicating they've been in pursuit of other arms as well.

Alex Speier of the Boston Globe recently reported the Red Sox discussed a potential blockbuster trade for Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Jared Jones during the Winter Meetings. Nothing came to fruition, but that doesn't mean the groundwork isn't there for a deal.

"Starting pitching has been a priority for the Red Sox this winter, and the club has actively addressed that need by trading for Garrett Crochet and signing both Walker Buehler and Patrick Sandoval," Speier wrote. "Several other starters have been on Boston's radar throughout the offseason, including some talks with the Pirates about right-hander Jared Jones during the Winter Meetings."

A deal could come together under one condition. The only player on the Red Sox that could warrant the Pirates to deal Jones would be first baseman Triston Casas. Casas will likely only be traded from Boston if the Red Sox acquire a third baseman, say Alex Bregman or Nolan Arenado, and move Rafael Devers to first base.

If Boston acquires a third baseman, it opens the door for Boston to trade Casas, who is very close in value to Jones. The Red Sox remain in the sweepstakes to sign Bregman. There are only a few teams left in pursuit of the veteran infielder. Arenado is a potential trade chip that could be had for quite cheap.

While there's nothing to indicate the two parties are working on a deal, it could definitely be something to monitor.
