Nolan Arenado clearly wants to play for the Boston Red Sox. But is the feeling mutual?
Early this week, MLB Network's Jon Morosi reported the Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals renewed trade talks centered around the star third baseman, who has a no-trade clause in his contract. Various offseason reports indicate Boston is Arenado's preferred destination, but the Red Sox's interest in Alex Bregman has made it difficult to predict how this story will end.
Nevertheless, according to ESPN's Buster Olney, Arenado is dead-set on joining the Red Sox.
"Given that Nolan Arenado vetoed the potential deal to the Astros, what some of his friends say is important: They think he would really like the idea of going to the Red Sox, if Boston and the Cardinals work out terms," Olney wrote Wednesday on the X platform. "Arenado's current mindset: 'Highly, highly motivated.' "
Red Sox CEO Sam Kennedy teased potential big additions last weekend, and Boston's front office has remained open about its desire to add a quality righthanded bat.
That said, Arenado could be an awkward fit in Boston.
Assuming he would play third base, would the Red Sox move Rafael Devers across the diamond to first base? Would they then trade Triston Casas or make him a full-time designated hitter? What about making Devers a full-time DH if Masataka Yoshida is included in the Arenado trade?
Ultimately, those questions won't be answered until the Red Sox add Arenado -- or Bregman, for that matter. But the recent uptick in rumors suggests a big move could be on the horizon.
