A video of a cat who has been left with loose skin after losing weight has delighted internet viewers.
Racking up more than 20,000 upvotes, the clip shows 14-year-old Callie running down a hallway with her excess skin swinging from side to side.
In the comments, her owner u/50-ferrets-in-a-coat said: "My husband's ex-mother-in-law overfed her like crazy when she was living with them, which caused her to gain a ton of weight.
"After they split, he put her on a strict diet, and she went back to a perfect weight over the course of a few years. She is in perfect health!"
However, Callie has been left with the skin that they call a "skirt," according to the November 7 caption. Newsweek is waiting for a comment from u/50-ferrets-in-a-coat.
VCA Hospitals experts say that nearly 60 percent of domestic cats are overweight. Obesity significantly shortens a feline's life span and increases the risk of developing various health issues. Even being moderately overweight can reduce a cat's life expectancy. Studies have shown that obese cats between the ages of 8 and 12 face a 2.8 times higher risk of mortality compared to their lean counterparts.
Obesity in cats is linked to an increased risk of the following health problems:
- Cancer
- Diabetes mellitus
- Heart disease and hypertension
- Osteoarthritis and accelerated joint degeneration
- Urinary bladder stones
- Complications during anesthesia
Cat owners are encouraged to work closely with their veterinarian and veterinary care team to evaluate their pet's weight and establish a healthy goal. Veterinarians often recommend a specialized diet with reduced calorie density and balanced nutrients to support weight loss.
Once your feline reaches their ideal body weight and condition, maintaining that healthy weight becomes crucial. Gradually increasing food portions while monitoring their weight helps the metabolism adjust to a sustainable, "normal" feeding routine. This "reverse diet" approach ensures a smooth transition to a maintenance diet and supports long-term health.
So far, the post has 155 comments, and it is safe to say Reddit users are obsessed with Callie.
"The swishing- it really does look like a skirt. She's so cute," posted one user, while another wrote: "Strutting her stuff on the cat walk."
Some users wondered whether the cat's excess skin would ever retract, but that is not the case.
"Her skin will never shrink back down; she has a skirt forever now," the owner wrote in the comments.
Another user praised the cat's unique look, saying, "Oh myyy, she's amazing. Her skirt flapping, the elegance, the gracefulness!!" Meanwhile, a different commenter described her as "slim and sassy."
