‘Shogun’ Scores Golden Globe Win for Best Drama After Emmys Triumph

Shogun took home the Golden Globe trophy for best TV drama series Sunday.

Justin Marks, creator of the historical FX samurai series, when accepting the award following an earlier triumph at the Emmys recalled the absurdity of a day earlier looking with wife and series co-creator Rachel Kondo in their garden at home for a lost 50-pound tortoise.

“Nothing about this show has ever been expected. Truly, it was made on the backs of thousands of yesses that we received over the years from our East-meets-West cast and crew, an extraordinary cast standing right here. To our writer and our directors and our partners at Disney Television, FX and Hulu, all of you guys said yes so many times over the years to a show that on paper you should, quite frankly, have never said yes to. It’s a miracle that everyone still have their jobs,” Marks said from the Golden Globes stage.

“It’s a miracle that we still have our marriage and it’s a miracle if we ever find that tortoise again. So we will get a GPS tracker soon, girls. I promise. And thank you so much for this,” Marks insisted.

The Golden Globe triumph followed Shogun, a non-English language drama, earning a record 18 trophies at the 2024 Emmys. And in another Emmys repeat, series lead Hiroyuki Sanada earlier in the evening picked up the Golden Globe for best TV drama actor and co-star Anna Sawai earned the Golden Globe for best TV drama actress for her performance in the drama.

Shogun came into the 2025 Golden Globes with four nominations, and beat stiff competition in the best TV drama competition from Peacock’s The Day of the Jackal, Netflix’s The Diplomat, Mr. & Mrs Smith at Prime Video, Apple TV+’s Slow Horses and Netflix’s Squid Game.

The hit FX samurai series earlier cleaned up as the first non-English-language show to win best drama competition at the 2024 Emmys. Shogun is based on author James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name and its continuing award season triumph is a major moment for Asian representation in global TV.

The 2025 Golden Globes took place on Jan. 5 at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.

Golden Globes producer Dick Clark Productions is owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a joint venture between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge that also owns The Hollywood Reporter.
