Sophie Wessex's bag packing led to her being 'offered a job' at a supermarket

4 hours ago 5

Sophie Wessex was "offered a job" at a supermarket by an employee who didn't realise she was a member of the Royal Family.

The Duchess of Edinburgh was reportedly so adept at packing her bags in Waitrose that the lady serving her mentioned they had some vacancies available in store. Sophie's close friend, Mary Montagu-Scott, shared this amusing anecdote ahead of the royal's 60th birthday tomorrow January 20.

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday, she said: "The lady clearly had no idea who Sophie was. Sophie is both an asset to the nation and to the Royal Family, but more than anything she is a fantastic friend."

Many view the duchess as one of the "safest" pairs of hands in the Royal Family. Last year, she carried out 257 engagements both domestically and internationally, ranking fourth among the royals.

This has led to comparisons with Princess Anne, the King's sister, who performed more engagements than any other Royal last year. Much of Sophie's work, according to the Mail, goes "under the radar".

The duchess prefers to drive herself around with a "minimal entourage" and is also known for doing her own hair and makeup, reports Surrey Live.

Sophie and her husband Prince Edward tied the knot in June 1999. They chose to hold the service at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, a departure from both of Edward's brothers who married at the larger Westminster Abbey.

Sophie is set to celebrate her birthday at home with her husband and a handful of friends.

Her children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Earl of Wessex, are likely to be at university and boarding school respectively.

The Royal Family will send their customary well-wishes to Sophie, who has become an "indispensable" member of The Firm over recent years.
