What Happened to Natalia Grace?
Natalia, an orphan from Ukraine, was adopted by Indiana couple Michael and Kristine Barnett in 2010. After Natalia moved into their home, Michael and Kristine grew suspicious of her age and eventually accused Natalia of being an adult posing as a child. They claimed that she pulled off the alleged scheme because she had a form of dwarfism called spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, which made her appear younger than she actually was.
The Barnetts claimed that Natalia acted with violent tendencies and allegedly tried to poison Kristine’s coffee, as well as kill her by dragging her towards an electric fence. Natalia has denied the allegations that she lied after her age and tried to hurt the Barnetts.
“I was 6 years old when I came to the United States. I just know that a family came and visited me and after a while, they adopted me,” she told BBC in 2019, also insisting that she was also innocent of their claims she tried to kill them.
Following the alleged incidents, the Barnetts petitioned Marion County Probate Court in Indiana to have Natalia’s age legally changed to 22. However, DNA tests have indicated that Natalia was around 9-years-old when she was adopted.
The Barnetts later moved to Canada without Natalia and set her up in an apartment in Lafayette, Indiana. Natalia eventually met Cynthia, who invited her to move in with her and Antwon just a few days after they met.
