Jesse Eisenberg doesn't want anything to do with the glitz and glamour of Hollywood

Despite his status as an A-lister, the Zombieland actor has revealed why he unexpectedly decided to leave the celebrity enclave for a simple life in America's Midwestern region. 

"I've lived in Indiana for a decade on-and-off and that's where I feel the most comfortable," Eisenberg, 41, in an interview with CBS News

"I'm not somebody who wants to surround myself in an industry that just feels kind of unstable."

As Eisenberg leads a life away from prying eyes, he opened up about his experience living in Indiana. 

The star shared that he and his wife, Anna Strout, moved to the Midwest, where she was born in 2020, to volunteer at a domestic shelter in Bloomington.

The couple journeyed to Indiana with their son Banner, seven, at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, living in a rented RV to protect themselves.

"I was just volunteering every day at the shelter," Eisenberg said, calling it the "happiest time" of his life. 

"I was painting walls and fixing garbage disposals," he said.

"I just loved it so much. I loved being able to accomplish something where there was no critique of it."  

Despite his move, Eisenberg's career is still thriving. He recently took his second crack at directing a feature film with A Real Pain.

The film has received rave reviews, with critics singing his praise, a notion Eisenberg isn't overly comfortable with.

"No, I'm not really wired to enjoy praise," he confessed.

"I don't know why. I think it just, like, I don't know, triggers some guilt response in my brain and I try to find something to be miserable about.

"But I'll tell you what I do love: I love actually doing my job. Like, I feel so lucky that I found something I like to do."
