Whether you’re looking at the women around you, or are thinking back to some of the characters you’ve seen in movies and TV, we’re guessing you know just how complicated and multi-dimensional women can be. We can be strong, brave, vulnerable, ambitious, sexy, funny and the list goes on.
So, of course, it’s no surprise that so many of our favorite 2024 movies had incredible, complicated female characters right in the center.
Just ask Demi Moore, whose performance in The Substance has brought on a major career comeback. “It really captivated me, the way in which it was exploring this subject of aging and, in particular, that violence that we can have against ourselves, the way in which we all — men and women alike — can dissect and criticize our own reflection,” Moore told The Hollywood Reporter. “It just felt so relatable, on a human level.”

Brazil’s I’m Still Here is a movie that’ll have you seeing the warm and beautiful country in a whole new light. Set during the dictatorship in the 70s, this movie follows the real-life story of Eunice Paiva, a mom of five whose husband was taken into questioning and never returned. It’s all about strength and the fight one woman had to honor her husband.

In a movie that’s responsible for Demi Moore’s renaissance, The Substance tells the story of Elisabeth Sparkle, a Hollywood actress who’s fired from her longtime role for not being young enough.
