Trace Cyrus claims that Billy Ray Cyrus is seeking legal action against him following his recent public plea urging his father to get help.
The 35-year-old musician, who was adopted by Billy Ray in 1993 after he married Trace’s mother, Tish Cyrus, first addressed the issue on social media earlier this month. His post came after Billy Ray faced widespread criticism for his performance at President Donald Trump’s 2025 inauguration. Now, Trace alleges that his father has responded with threats of legal action.
“For all of you wondering, no, I still haven’t heard from my dad,” Trace wrote in a Jan. 25 Instagram Story. “He did contact a family member to let me know he’s taking legal action against me for encouraging him to get help.” Trace ended the message with a direct plea: “Dad, I live 30 minutes away from you. You could’ve just come & talk to me like a man.”
The next day, Trace expanded on his concerns in a longer Instagram post addressed to Billy Ray.
“Dad, my message was beyond loving,” he wrote on Jan. 26, referring to his earlier post. “I could have been extremely honest about a lot more, but I don’t want to put your business out there like that. For you to threaten me with legal action for wanting you to get help is a disgrace.”
He continued, “Pappy is looking down at you with such disappointment, I can assure you. You should be ashamed of yourself. I will always love you, but I no longer respect you as a man. Everyone close to you is terrified to tell you how they really feel. I’m not. Get help.”
This wasn’t the first time Trace had spoken publicly about his father. On Jan. 22, he shared an emotional message on Instagram, expressing his concern for Billy Ray’s well-being and the impact it has had on their family.
“Since my earliest memories, all I can remember is being obsessed with you and thinking you were the coolest person ever,” the post began. “I wanted to be just like you. The day you adopted me was the happiest day of my life.”
However, Trace admitted that his view of his father has changed. “Sadly the man that I wanted so desperately to be just like I barely recognize now,” he wrote. “It seems this world has beaten you down, and it’s become obvious to everyone but you. You may be upset with me for posting this, but I really could care less at this point. Me and the girls have been genuinely worried about you for years, but you’ve pushed all of us away.”
Trace also addressed Billy Ray’s health directly. “You’re not healthy, Dad, and everyone is noticing it. Just like I showed up for you at mamaw’s funeral when you didn’t expect me to, I’m still here right now. As I write this with tears in my eyes, I hope you realize this message only comes from a place of love and also fear that the world may lose you far too soon,” he said. “I love you, Dad.”
