Walker Buehler hasn't taken the mound at Fenway Park, but the newest member of the Red Sox is already making pitches on Boston's behalf.
Buehler, whose one-year, $21.05 million contract with the Red Sox became official Dec. 23, spoke to the Boston media for the first time Friday. Nestled among his comments was an answer to the question on the tip of many minds: would he help recruit friend, business partner and fellow free agent Alex Bregman to Boston?
Faster than a Townie drops the "r" in Buehler.
"I have certainly made a pitch all over the place," he told reporters, including Rob Bradford of WEEI.
Buehler and Bregman, the third baseman who became a free agent after a nine-year career in Houston in which he helped the Astros win the World Series in 2017 and 2022, have a unique relationship in baseball. The pair co-owns a 3-year-old racehorse, March of Time, that won for the first time at Santa Anita last week.
According to the Associated Press, the colt's third owner is Jill Baffert, the wife of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.
In addition to his World Series rings, Bregman is a two-time All-Star, and a winner of both the Gold Glove (2024) and Silver Slugger (2019) awards at third base. The fit in Boston isn't perfect, but the Red Sox are motivated spenders this offseason after losing the sweepstakes for free agent slugger Juan Soto.
