The Golden State Warriors revealed how they plan to honor guard Klay Thompson when he returns to the Bay Area next week. NBA insider Marc Stein reported that Golden State will be handing out a captain's hat to all fans in attendance at the Chase Center.
Thompson famously loves boats and has taken plenty of rides on the San Francisco Bay during his time with the team. This is a cool way for the organization to honor such an important player in their team's history.
Thompson left the Warriors this offseason to land with the Dallas Mavericks after the two sides couldn't agree on contract terms. It was a hard decision for Thompson to leave Golden State but he felt like he was being disrespected in the negotiations.
Both sides have done well for themselves so far so this will be a nice way to respect what Thompson did while in Golden State. He helped the Warriors win four NBA titles, being part of the infamous Splash Brothers duo alongside Steph Curry.

In the game that the Mavericks head to the Bay Area, it will be the first game for each side in this year's version of the NBA Cup. The matchup will mean a little more than the average regular season game, shining a light on the return of Thompson against his old team.
Golden State hasn't missed Thompson as they have started the year with a record of 7-1. They have used the strong depth that they accumulated after his departure and it has worked out very well for them so far.
Dallas has started the season with a record of 5-3 as they try to all gel together. Implementing a player like Thompson shouldn't be too difficult for the Mavericks due to his strong shooting ability.

On the year, the veteran is averaging 14.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. He is also shooting 39.1 percent from beyond the 3-point line for the Mavericks.
This matchup will likely be bittersweet for Thompson and the Warriors organization so emotions will be flying around. But once the ball goes up in the air after the tip-off, it will be all business for both sides trying to grab a big win.
