Wayne Rooney has been let go as manager of Plymouth Argyle after just seven months in charge - and during that time he missed a major moment for his wife Coleen Rooney.

The Manchester United legend, 39, led his club to just four Championship wins this season, leaving them rock bottom of the table.

The manager's under fire job meant he was unable to greet Coleen, 38, when she finished runner-up in ITV's I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!, which sees exiting contestants embraced by family or friends at the end of a rope bridge. Wayne's team faced four games in 16 days during the course of the show and while Coleen was said to be 'gutted' he couldn't be reunited with her immediately, a Sun source said she understood 'how demanding his job is'.

While Wayne's sacrifice didn't pay off in the long term, Coleen was happy to be greeted by her mum and dad and youngest boys Kit, seven and Cass, five, when she left the show and called her husband as soon as she was able.

She had previously said Wayne was behind her surprise decision to go on the reality show her family love watching, saying: "Wayne is supportive, he's fine with it all. If he had the time, he'd have a go" . Coleen even joked her husband might be glad of a break due to a bad habit of hers, saying: "Wayne says I snore, not continuously though."

The couple have four sons, with Kai, 13 and Klay, 10, elder siblings to Kit and Cass. With several school aged children and a busy husband, Coleen relied on an 'army' of family and friends to help when she was away.

The organised mum had filled two huge whiteboards in her dining room with her children's schedules, telling the show: "I am really anxious about leaving the kids, that's my biggest thing, for weeks and months that's been on my mind. But I've come to terms with it and I've planned and prepped, I've got an army of people - family and friends - school friends all helping out with the kids.

"They are going to be fine, they'll probably have a great time. I've prepped as you can see, behind me, that is literally front and back four weeks of timetables, football runs, parties and everything."

Coleen wrote her boys a card each and left them a teddy to make sure they knew she would always be thinking of them when away on the three-week long show. Before she went, she said: "We've done letters to Father Christmas today so they'll get posted on the way to school tomorrow which was another thing I wanted to do before I go."

The couple have been married for 16 years, after meeting as teenagers in Liverpool. Their relationship has famously faced ups and downs, including multiple allegations of cheating by Wayne plus his drink-driving offences.

The star told Fearne Cotton's Happy Place podcast whey they remained strong. "Wayne and I are a team," she said. "We've helped each other through life. We are good at seeing the best outcome, rather than the worst. Hopefully it's going to like that for the rest and it's going to be a nice, smooth-sailing marriage. I don't know if you can get one of them."
