What Happened to UHC CEO Brian Thompson?

Thompson was fatally shot outside of a Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan on 54th Street between 6th and 7th avenue. The shooting happened shortly before 7 a.m. and he was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. He was 50 years old.

The identity of the shooter remains unknown and the suspect is still at large at the time of publication. However, people who witnessed the incident said that the individual’s face was obscured by a black mask and he was carrying a gray backpack. After killing Thompson, the suspect fled into an alleyway nearby.

News 8 WTNH reported that the “UnitedHealthGroup was scheduled to start its annual Investor Conference at 8 a.m. Wednesday, according to the company.”

The day following Thompson’s murder, TMZ reported that shell casings from the gun were found and had “deny,” “defend” and “depose” written on them. The words were just slightly altered from a 2010 book, Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It.

On December 5, 2024, the New York Police Department released new photos of the suspected murderer. In the images, the suspect could be seen with a smile on his face. The pictures were taken from an Upper West Side youth hostel, and police believe the man may have been staying there prior to the shooting.
