Luigi Mangione Is an Ivy League Graduate

His X profile states that he has an “M.S.E. and B.S.E. in Computer Science” from the University of Pennsylvania.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Luigi started college in 2016 and “graduated with master’s and bachelor’s in computer science in a combined 4 years.” He graduated with the academic honor of Cum Laude. His concentration was studying Artificial Intelligence while he minored in mathematics.

While in college, Luigi was the founder and project lead for Penn’s first video game development club. He spent the summer of 2019 at Stanford University designing “lesson plans and taught artificial intelligence to gifted high school students as an AI teaching assistant.”

Luigi was also a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity while at Penn.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Luigi most recently worked as a level III data engineer for TrueCar Inc., based in Santa Monica, California. He started with the company as a level I data engineer in November 2020 and his profile says he is still working there.

Luigi described his duties as, “Spearheaded the transition and integration of lease/loan payments to a new API, expanded pricing data sources, and improved call frequency and conditions, resulting in a 34% increase in new vehicle payments populated and more up-to-date payments on TrueCar.com.”

According to the company’s website, TrueCar “lets you control your car-buying journey” where users can “shop new and used cars, sell your car, and find all the vehicle information you need with our research.”

Although his job was based in Southern California, Luigi lists Honolulu, Hawaii, as his home on his X page and LinkedIn. He included several photos hiking through the lush mountains of the state.

What Happened to United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson?

Thompson was walking to the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan at approximately 6:45 a.m. on December 4, 2024, when he was shot assassination-style by a masked man wearing a hood. Thompson was on his way to attend a shareholder’s conference when the shooting occurred. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The suspect fled the scene on foot then disappeared into Central Park on an e-scooter. He abandoned a backpack, which was later found to contain a jacket and Monopoly game money, but no weapon.

Surveillance video captured the suspect taking down his mask at a nearby hostel the morning of the shooting, which the N.Y.P.D. released the photo in hopes of the public identifying the suspect.

When Was Luigi Mangione Arrested?

Luigi Mangione was taken into custody in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on December 9, 2024, after getting off a Greyhound bus and entering a McDonald’s. He was recognized by several patrons from the surveillance photo, and the store’s manager called local police.

Altoona police discovered Luigi had a gun and a silencer similar to the one used in Thompson’s killing as well as a fake New Jersey ID the suspect reportedly used to check into the hostel, N.Y.P.D. Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed. Mangione was arrested on a gun charge by Altoona P.D. and held as a person of interest in Thompson’s murder.
