Why Sarah Michelle Gellar Got in “Trouble” Posting ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Reboot Set Photo

Sarah Michelle Gellar is revealing that she actually “got in a bit of trouble” for posting a photo from the set of the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot.

The actress, who starred in the original 1997 film, alongside now-husband Freddie Prinze Jr., Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ryan Phillippe, shared an on-set photo on Nov. 27 of a chair with the film’s title on it, causing quite a stir on social media surrounding the remake.

“You would think that being in my position, I know what rules are on sets when they say closed sets, you know,” she said during a Tuesday appearance on Live With Kelly and Mark. “So my husband’s starring in the movie and it was Thanksgiving so I took our kids to Australia to go out there and visit him. And I was sitting on set and I was like, ‘Oh what a great picture,’ and then I posted it.”

However, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum later learned she posted the pic a bit too early.

“Then I found out that they hadn’t posted any pictures from the set yet — hadn’t announced they started filming,” she explained. “Yeah … that was an ‘Oops! My bad!'”

Co-host Kelly Ripa proceeded to point out that Gellar’s Instagram has a much larger following than the reboot film’s official account (the actress has more than 4.6 million followers, while the film’s page has just over 4,500 followers). But the Cruel Intentions actress revealed that the movie’s page was actually created in response to Gellar’s unplanned post.

While Gellar has previously said she would be part of the new sequel in an “unofficial” capacity, her husband is reprising his role and Hewitt is in talks to return as well. The original movie follows four young friends bound by a tragic accident who are reunited when they find themselves being stalked by a hook-wielding killer in their small seaside town.

Prinze Jr. and Hewitt also returned for the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. The upcoming reboot, directed by Gellar’s friend Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, is set to star Camila Mendes, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Hauer-King.

Sony’s I Know What You Did Last Summer is set to be released next summer.
