Seven states have issued winter storm warnings and weather advisories, and extensive blowing snow is forecast over the following days. The National Weather Service has issued warnings and advisories for North Dakota, Alaska, New York, Michigan, Wisconsin, Vermont, and Minnesota, with snowstorm warnings issued in Michigan. "Blowing snow is wind-driven snow that reduces surface visibility. Blowing snow can be falling snow or snow that has already accumulated but is picked up and blown by strong winds. Blowing snow is usually accompanied by drifting snow," the National Weather Service (NWS) reported. This notice is in effect in Iron County, where gusts gusting up to 40 mph may cause blowing snow, until 6 a.m. CST Thursday. Snowfalls of up to 10 inches are also forecast. The NWS also warns that the extremely cold wind chills here—sometimes as low as 45 degrees below zero—can induce frostbite on exposed flesh in less than 10 minutes.
