A woman has shared the moment she caught herself in the middle of a chaotic scene after a shooting erupted near where she was collecting her prescription.
"I was at the CVS picking up a prescription when the incident occurred," Funmi Dosunmu, who lives in Northwest Washington, D.C. told Newsweek. "The line was long, and I thought about leaving, but something told me to wait. That's when we heard what sounded like 50 gunshots. It was chaotic—people were screaming and crying."
The shooting, which took place on October 17, around 6:30 p.m. near Georgia Avenue and Quebec Place NW, left one woman injured and caused widespread panic as bullets shattered the window of the CVS across the street.
Dosunmu described the moments inside the store as frantic, with some customers attempting to flee before realizing the shooting was ongoing outside.
"Some ran outside but quickly came back in because the shooting was still happening," she said. "We were at the back of the pharmacy and weren't sure what was happening."
The gunfire, which witnesses say lasted about two minutes, sent customers and staff scrambling for cover. "The shooting stopped after about two minutes, and police arrived on the scene within five minutes," Dosunmu said. "It was extremely reckless for the shooters to choose that location—it's such a busy place."
In a statement, Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police urged anyone who can identify the suspects or has knowledge of the incident to contact the police.
Police believe the shooting was carried out by a man wearing a ski mask, who fired multiple rounds, striking a woman. The victim was found conscious nearly six blocks away, on Manor Place NW, and was transported to a local hospital, where she is recovering. Authorities are still investigating whether she was targeted or if the attack was random.
The incident left Dosunmu shaken. A content creator, she decided to share what happened on TikTok where a video of the moment has been viewed over 840,000 times.
In the footage, Dosunmu shared the moment she was told not to leave the CVS, and the resulting damage from the shooting, including a smashed window and large police presence outside the store.
"This is so traumatizing. I'm glad you are ok," one commenter said in response to the TikTok video.
While another was amazed by how calm the people in the video appeared and wrote: "I'm impressed how calm everyone is! So glad y'all were ok."
While the incident was dealt with quickly by authorities, it was enough to put Dosunmu off shopping there again. "I will not be returning to that area," she said.
