Wordle became a global sensation during the COVID-19 pandemic when Welsh software engineer Josh Wardle came up with the game.
The now-viral brainteaser was released to the public in October 2021 and was sold to The New York Times for an undisclosed seven-figure sum in January 2022.
What started out as a fun activity for Wardle and his partner to enjoy, has since become a viral hit—boasting celebrity users including Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Meghan Markle, Bradley Cooper and Jason Bateman. Despite inventing Wordle, however, Wardle could use some pointers himself.
"I'm afraid I'm not really the best," Wardle told Newsweek in 2022. "[My partner] and I play it on the couch together each morning. She will consistently get it in three goes, which is way, way better than I can ever hope to achieve. I normally need at least four or five attempts."
To conquer the game, players must figure out the daily five-letter word after six attempts through an elimination process. Green boxes indicate the letter is correct and in the correct place; yellow boxes indicate the letter is in the word, though not in the correct spot; and gray boxes indicate the letter is not in the word at all.
The simplicity is what makes the game so popular, Erhan Aslan, associate professor of applied linguistics at the University of Reading in the U.K., previously told Newsweek.
"Word-based puzzles and games have been around for quite a while, and they are nothing new," Aslan shared in November 2022. "What is different or new today is how and where people play games. Before the digital age, word puzzle games, particularly crossword puzzles, would usually appear in newspapers and magazines. People would do them while waiting for the bus or train, in the toilet, or just to kill time."
Aslan added: "In today's digital age, like many other things, many simple games like Wordle can be played online. I think that Wordle gains its popularity not only from its simple rules but also from its virality on social-media platforms as a result of people sharing/posting their scores to demonstrate a sense of accomplishment and validation."
