Yankees, Mets Owners To Have Dueling Meetings With Juan Soto Next Week: Report

That escalated quickly.

Shortly after it was reported that New York Mets owner Steve Cohen personally managed to meet with outfielder Juan Soto, the star of the offseason's free agent class, the New York Post reported Friday that Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner will do the same.

The Yankees are attempting to re-sign Soto after he hit a career-high 41 home runs for the Bronx Bombers in 2024, helping lead the team to its first World Series appearance in 15 years.

The Mets are in hot pursuit of Soto too, setting up an offseason showdown between the two Major League Baseball rivals for one of the sport's biggest stars.

"The billionaire behemoths have begun the fight for one of the most enticing baseball free agents ever — a battle that surely will include much of the rest of the league but could come down to the New York powers," writes Jon Heyman in the Post.

More to come on this story from Newsweek Sports.
