He reached American Idol top 5

Triston Harper was a top five finalist on season 22 of the long-running singing competition show, which ran from February to May 2023, but Abi Carter was ultimately crowned the winner.

A then-15-year-old Harper auditioned for the show in front of judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie — performing Jason Isbell’s “Cover Me Up” — and opened up about his difficult childhood.

“I grew up in a small town. I’ve been through a lot in my life,” he said. While Harper sat outside his home in McIntosh, he told the camera, “I grew up right here, since I was born basically.”

“My mama wanted us to be something — that’s why I got into music. The lowest part of my life is when me and my mom had got homeless and were sleeping on the sidewalk [at age 12].”

Harper said he never imagined having the opportunity to share his story with millions on American Idol. “It makes me happy just thinking about it,” he said in the video segment.
