2024 Celebrity Deaths: Remembering the Stars We’ve Lost This Year

Rest in peace. 2024 has been a tough year for celebrity deaths thus far. Keep reading for a recap of the stars we’ve lost this year.

One of the biggest news ​stories to break this year was the passing of Liam Payne. The former One Direction member died at age 31 on Wednesday, October 16, after falling three stories from his hotel balcony in Buenos, Argentina.

In a public statement, the prosecutor’s office revealed that Liam died from “polytrauma and internal and external bleeding,” noting that “a series of substances were seized from the musician’s room, which would prove a previous situation of alcohol and drugs consumption.”

Calling Liam’s death “doubtful/undetermined,” the prosecutor’s office indicated that his death is currently inconclusive on whether he fell or jumped. However, it also pointed out the evidence proves “that the musician was alone when the fall occurred, and that he was going through some kind of breakdown as a result of substance abuse.”

The English musician was a member of popular boy band One Direction since its inception in 2010 on X-Factor UK. Consisting of himself, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Harry Styles and Zayn Malik, One Direction quickly became one of the most successful bands of all time, leading them to release four albums and embarked on several world tours.

Along with posting personal messages, the former One Direction members released a joint message on their Instagram account.

“The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us,” Harry, Niall, Louis and Zayn said in a joint statement posted to the band’s Instagram page. “We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam.”

Their statement added: “In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly.”
