This year’s 2025 Golden Globe Awards nominations are officially here and there were plenty of snubs and surprises in the star-studded lineup.
The 2025 Golden Globes is set to take place on January 5, 2025, movie critics and TV lovers alike can’t wait for the major awards that lie ahead. After all, with so many exciting movies this year from The Substance and Anora to I’m Still Here and Sing Sing, it’s a year that had viewers crying, singing, cheering and much more.
On Dec. 9, the Golden Globe Awards were announced with the help of Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut. In the announcement, nominations honored the best performances both in TV and film. Among the top earners were Emilia Pérez, which scored a whopping 10 nominations, and The Brutalist, which was nominated for seven altogether. As for TV shows, The Bear got the most nods with five nominations while Only Murders in the Building and Nobody Wants This trailed behind with four and three, respectively.

Snub: Marianne Jean-Baptiste for ‘Hard Truths’
One of the most talked about snubs today is of Marianne Jean-Baptiste in Hard Truths in which she plays a woman battling depression. She’s already won a British Independent Film Award, NYFCC Award and was nominated for a Gotham Award for that role.

Snub: Saorise Ronan for ‘Blitz’
Saoirse Ronan was not nominated for her role as a mother whose son was evacuted and taken away from her during World War II. With two incredible movies Blitz and The Outrun released this year, fans of the Irish actress were rooting for a double nomination. Sadly, however, she wasn’t nominated for either.

Snub: Saoirse Ronan for ‘The Outrun’
Ronan also wasn’t nominated for her critically-acclaimed role in The Outrun in which she played a woman battling addiction.

Snub: Paul Mescal in ‘Gladiator II’
As one of the most talked-about movies of the year, Gladiator II‘s main star Paul Mescal was not recognized by the Golden Globes today. The movie only got nods for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Supporting Actor for Denzel Washington.

Snub: Danielle Deadwyler in ‘The Piano Lesson’
Danielle Deadwyler was also snubbed for her role in The Piano Lesson. For her role, she’s been nominated for a Gotham Award, nominated for an Independent Spirit Award, and the Astra Film Awards.

Snub: Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor in ‘Nickel Boys’
Another actress who didn’t get the honor she deserved was Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor. She did not get a Supporting Actress nod for Nickel Boys which was nominated in the Best Drama category.

Snub: Timothée Chalamet for ‘Dune: Part Two’
While Timothée Chalamet did score a nod for his role in The Complete Unknown, many might’ve been surprised not to see him get a nod for his other major movie this year, Dune: Part Two.

Snub: Clarence Maclin in ‘Sing Sing’
Coming off of his Supporting Actor win at the 2024 Gotham Awards, Clarence Maclin was unfortunately snubbed by the Golden Globes for his role as an incarcerated man who joins a theatre program in Sing Sing.

Snub: ‘Sing Sing’
While Colman Domingo got a Best Actor nomination, that was the movie’s only nod. Critics were expecting Best Picture and Best Supporting Actors at least.

Snub: ‘Gladiator II’
As previously mentioned, Gladiator II got fewer nominations than people were expecting, including a major snub in the Best Motion Picture Drama category. The movie only got nods for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Supporting Actor for Denzel Washington.

Surprise: Pamela Anderson for ‘The Last Showgirl’
With such competitive Best Actress categories this year, many were surprised to see Pamela Anderson nominated for The Last Showgirl. “I’m a wildcard,” she famously told Entertainment Tonight.

Surprise: Fernanda Torres in ‘I’m Still Here’
While the Brazilian movie I’m Still Here was a shoo-in for the Non-English Language category, Brazilian fans rejoiced to see that Fernanda Torres was also nominated in the Best Actress in a Drama Movie category. She becomes the second actress from her country to be nominated for the award. The first was given to Torres’ very own mother, Fernanda Montenegro, for Central do Brasil in 1998.

Surprise: Sebastian Stan in ‘The Apprentice’
Sebastian Stan has some major wins in today’s announcements. Not only did he get a nod for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Movie for A Different Man, but Stan also got a nod for his role as Donald Trump in The Apprentice in the Drama category.

Surprise: Selena Gomez in ‘Emilia Pérez’
Speaking of double nominees, Selena Gomez was nominated for two completely different categories. In addition to scoring her third nod in a row for Female Actor in a Television Series for Only Murders in the Building, Gomez also got a nod for a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture – Musical or Drama for Emilia Pérez.

Surprise: Jesse Plemons for ‘Kinds of Kindness’
While Yorgos Lanthimos’ movie Poor Things took the 2024 awards season by storm, his new movie Kinds of Kindness also scored one nod today: Jesse Plemons for Best Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

Surprise: Margaret Qualley in ‘The Substance’
While The Substance is another movie viewers can’t stop talking about, much of the chatter revolves around Demi Moore’s incredible performance. Marget Qualley’s supporting role, however, hasn’t been as celebrated. But in today’s announcement, Qually surprisingly scored a Supporting Actress nod.

Snub: Nicole Kidman in ‘The Perfect Couple’
Moving on to TV snubs and surprises, Nicole Kidman might’ve scored a nomination for her movie Babygirl, but she wasn’t recognized for the Netflix hit, The Perfect Couple.

Snub: Sharon Horgan in ‘Bad Sisters’
If you’ve seen Apple TV+’s Bad Sisters, then you know just how good Sharon Horgan is on the show. Sadly, however, she didn’t score a nod for the show’s sophomore season.

Snub: Brian Jordan Alvarez for ‘English Teacher’
This morning, many were shocked to see that English Teacher star and creator Brian Jordan Alvarez didn’t get a nod for Best Actor in a TV series.

Surprise: Ted Danson in ‘A Man on the Inside’
In that same category, Ted Danson surprised us all with a nod for A Man on the Inside.
