Amanda Holden took to Instagram to defend her hosting debut of the Royal Variety Performance after fans had slammed her efforts.

The Britain's Got Talent judge took to the stage with best pal Alan Carr as they presented the annual charity bash. However, just moments into their appearance, fans took to Twitter /X to criticise their efforts.

Now, Amanda has defended their efforts and hit back at the criticism despite saying she knows she should "ignore it". She explained both her and Alan "loved every second" of their appearance on a "joyous and successful evening". She then claimed: "All the big shows get battered… Merry Christmas you lovely lot. Our ratings were brilliant so that’s what counts xx"

Her words were met with praise by a number of other famous faces, including Mark Wright and Romesh Ranganathan. Their performance was also defended by actress Victoria Smurfit who wrote: "Take it as proof you were both brilliant!!!!!"

Leigh Francis - who is also known as Keith Lemon - also defended his friend, saying: "I didn’t see it but I bet you were both amazing! I’ve seen you together hosting an awards and you were ace!"

The defence comes after the pre-recorded event that took place last month and aired on Sunday was met with criticism online. One fan bluntly let their feelings known, writing on Twitter/X: "Amanda Holden, no thanks #RoyalVarietyPerformance." A second had added: "Dreadful presenters #RoyalVarietyPerformance," while a third person complained: "Well, Alan Carr and Amanda Holden are absolutely dreadful. This opening is so awkward. #RoyalVarietyPerformance."

Despite the criticism, Amanda had earlier shared her delight at being a part of the occasion. She labelled her role as being a moment "an honour". Before the programme aired, she had said: "It truly is such an honour to be hosting the Royal Variety Performance this year. I'm still pinching myself! This is a dream job and Alan is a true friend, we are already bursting with ideas and excitement, it's going to be such a fun night!

"I've worked on Britain’s Got Talent for 18 years and have been so proud watching all our winners perform for the Royal Family. This year will be no different, so in the words of Sydnie Christmas, let’s av it!"

She had also told viewers they were "in for a treat" as she promoted the show in the build up. Alan had also echoed her comments pre-show. He gushed: "I am completely thrilled to be asked back to host the Royal Variety Performance so soon, what a compliment and an honour! To be able to host this magical evening with my best friend and tv wife Amanda Holden is the icing on the cake for me. If we have half as much fun as we did three years ago, well we are all in for a real treat."
