Apple has introduced a new tool within its Find My ecosystem aimed at improving how users track their belongings, especially when traveling. The “Share Item Location” feature allows users to share the location of accessories, such as items tagged with an AirTag, directly with friends or even participating airlines, enhancing the ease of finding misplaced items.

This development signals a significant advancement in Apple’s focus on making travel more seamless for its users.

Apple’s New Find My Tool Makes Tracking Lost Items Easier Than Ever

A Solution Tailored for Travelers

The Share Item Location feature could prove invaluable for frequent travelers. Apple has partnered with over 15 airlines across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, with plans to integrate tracking services soon. This partnership aims to streamline how passengers locate misplaced luggage or items left on flights.

Notable airlines participating in this collaboration include Air Canada, Air New Zealand, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, and Austrian Airlines.

Integration with SITA’s WorldTracer System Expands Reach

One of the most significant aspects of this feature is its integration with SITA’s WorldTracer system, a major player in aviation technology. With WorldTracer onboard, Apple’s Share Item Location feature will extend to over 500 airlines and 2,800 airports globally. This move not only broadens the scope of Apple’s Find My network but also strengthens its reliability for passengers around the world.

Part of iOS 18.2 Beta Update

This feature comes as part of Apple’s iOS 18.2 beta, rolling out in regions across North America and Asia. The update enhances all Apple devices compatible with the Find My network, allowing users to track any item connected via AirTags. This provides a cohesive, accessible solution within the Apple ecosystem, uniting devices under one enhanced tracking feature.

Security and Privacy: Core of Apple’s New Feature

Apple has taken special care to emphasize privacy and security with the Share Item Location feature. The process of sharing location links with airlines or service providers is fully encrypted, ensuring that user privacy is maintained throughout the tracking process. Additionally, Apple requires identity verification to access the tracking dashboard, which can be done through an Apple Account within Family Sharing or via an authorized email address linked to the airline partner.

Only airlines officially recognized by Apple’s Share Item Location initiative have access to the tracking feature, creating a trusted and secure network. This ensures that users’ information remains private and is only accessible to approved partners.

Real-Time Tracking and Location Updates

For users needing to locate a lost Apple device or item with an AirTag, the process is straightforward. A Share Item Location link can be generated within the Find My app, allowing users to share a map displaying the item’s current location. The location updates automatically as new information becomes available, with each update time-stamped for accuracy. This real-time capability provides users with a consistent and transparent view of their belongings’ whereabouts.
