Despite being a latecomer, Apple delivered the very first phase of its AI features for iPhone, iPad, and Mac customers on Monday with the most recent update. Even while Android manufacturers like Google and Samsung are already integrating artificial intelligence (AI) features into their devices, Apple’s marketing strategy for Apple Intelligence places a high priority on customer privacy. Apple Intelligence allows users to enhance writing, summarize notifications, mail, messages, and use a more natural Siri, while also removing distracting objects from images.

Apple Intelligence’s capabilities were not ready for the September introduction of the iPhone 16, even though they were unveiled at WWDC in June. Apple has released the first set of Apple Intelligence features for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users through a free software update. for iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, accessible in most regions worldwide when the device and Siri language are set to U.S. English. The company is adding support for more languages, including localised English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.K., and expanding language support throughout the year. Apple Intelligence is available on various devices, including iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro, iPad with A17 Pro or M1 and later, and Mac with M1 and later.

The system makes use of Apple silicon to understand and create language and images, take action across apps, and draw from personal context. It simplifies and speeds up everyday tasks while improving AI privacy. Additional features will be introduced in the following months.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO said, “Apple Intelligence introduces a new era for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, delivering brand-new experiences and tools that will transform what our users can accomplish. Apple Intelligence builds on years of innovation in AI and machine learning to put Apple’s generative models at the core of our devices, giving our users a personal intelligence system that is easy to use — all while protecting their privacy. Apple Intelligence is generative AI in a way that only Apple can deliver, and we’re incredibly excited about its ability to enrich our users’ lives.”

Apple Intelligence features include Writing Tools for writing refinement, summarised notifications for highlighting important notifications, and the ability to search for photos and videos by simply describing them.

Apple’s Writing Tools

Apple’s Writing Tools are integrated throughout iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, allowing users to improve their language skills by rewriting, proofreading, and summarising material across several apps. Rewrite allows users to select alternative versions of their work and change the tone to suit the audience and job. Proofreaders check grammar, word choice, and sentence structure and recommend revisions and explanations. Users can also choose to have content summarised in a variety of formats, including paragraphs, bulleted key points, tables, and lists.

Updated Siri

Siri has been improved to be more natural and conversational, with an exquisite glowing light that surrounds the screen when used on iPhone, iPad, or CarPlay. On Mac, Siri may be placed anywhere on the desktop for convenient access. Siri may be accessed at any moment and switched between text and voice to speed up daily activities. It now has improved language comprehension skills, allowing it to follow users as they stumble over words while maintaining context. Siri can also answer hundreds of queries about Apple devices’ functions and settings, helping consumers learn anything from screen recording to exchanging Wi-Fi passwords.

Improved Photo APP

The Photos app‘s intelligence has been improved with new capabilities including natural language search, which lets users search for particular events in videos, and smart completion recommendations, which help users complete searches more quickly. This functionality works across many videos, allowing users to quickly identify relevant segments and perform queries.

Prioritize and stay focused on emails

Apple has added new capabilities to help users prioritise and focus on emails. Priority Messages, a new area at the top of the inbox, showcases the most urgent chats, and users may read summaries without opening the message. Users can access relevant details from long discussions by tapping or clicking Summarise. Smart Reply makes ideas for quick responses and recognises questions in emails for prompt responses. Apple Intelligence also helps users prioritise and stay in the moment by providing notification summaries, which allow them to skim long or stacked notifications on the Lock Screen. A new Focus, Reduce Interruptions, only shows messages that require quick attention.

Apple has added audio recording, transcription, and summarisation functionality to the Notes and Phone apps. Recordings are automatically triggered during calls, and Apple Intelligence creates a summary at the end to help you remember important details.

Upcoming Features

In December, Apple Intelligence will provide additional capabilities, such as the option to create unique Genmojis and personalise them with images of friends or family members. The Image Playground allows users to easily generate entertaining graphics, whilst the Image Wand makes notes more visually appealing by transforming rough sketches into wonderful visuals. When a user circles an empty spot, the feature will generate visuals based on the context of the area around it.
Writing Tools will become more powerful in December, allowing users to specify precise changes to their writing, such as turning a dinner party invitation into poetry or adding dynamic action words to a résumé. ChatGPT’s world knowledge will be available in Writing Tools and Siri, allowing users to benefit from image and document interpretation capabilities without switching between tools.

Furthermore, the new Camera Control on the iPhone 16 range will be based on Apple Intelligence, letting users learn about things and locations instantaneously. Users will be able to access restaurant information and engage with it, while also having control over when third-party tools are utilised and what information is shared. In the future, Priority Notifications will highlight what is most essential, and Siri will grow even more competent, providing personalised intelligence based on a user’s specific context.

Privacy and Protection

Apple Intelligence employs on-device processing to safeguard consumers’ privacy, with models operating exclusively on devices. Private Cloud Compute extends Apple devices’ privacy and security to the cloud for requests that require greater processing power. Users’ data is never saved or shared with Apple, and independent experts may examine the code running on Apple silicon servers to verify this privacy assurance. Users may activate ChatGPT integration, which is part of Siri, Writing Tools, and Camera Control. ChatGPT is free and provides privacy features such as obscuring IP addresses and OpenAI not keeping requests. If you link your account, OpenAI’s data-use regulations will apply.
