Apple today unveiled the new smaller Mac mini, with M4 and M4 Pro chip options. The new Mini measures 5×5 inches square, significantly smaller than the generation it replaces.

Like with the iMac yesterday, Apple has shared an announcement video for the new machine, led by Apple SVP John Ternus. Watch it after the break …

In addition to the new chassis design, the new Mac mini is significantly faster than the previous generation. Apple skipped M3 for the Mac mini, so the previous most powerful model was powered by a M2 Pro chip.

Compared to M2 Pro, Apple says the M4 Mac mini is up to 1.6x faster on CPU and 1.5x faster on GPU on average. For intensive tasks, the rated performance jump is up to 2x faster.

Here’s the don’t-call-it-an-event video for the Mac mini announcement:

The new Mac mini starts at the same $599 price point, now with 16 GB RAM as standard, and is available to preorder today.

Apple ends the Mac mini announcement by teasing “more news coming tomorrow”. On Wednesday, we expect Apple to launch the M4 range of MacBook Pro, including the debut of the high-end M4 Max chip. Stay tuned to 9to5Mac for full coverage of everything new.
